PTFE, polytetrafluoroethylene, is a unique type of high temperature film used to make high temperature tape. First discovered in 1938 by a researcher at DuPont Research Labs in New Jersey, this film is flexible, will withstand high temperatures and has a high dielectric strength. It was first marketed in 1945 by Dupont under the registered trademark Teflon. Many companies can make PTFE , but only DuPont can make Teflon.
Today, Teflon and PTFE are used interchangeably however DuPont works hard to protect its trademark.
IPTFE tapes are made a number of different ways, each with its own unique characteristics. Extruded PTFE, skived PTFE and high modulus PTFE tapes are commonly used in high temp electrical applications.
