Duct tape is a type of cloth tape that includes a polyethylene top layer to add water resistance to the tape.  Originally developed during World War II as a moisture resistant tape to seal ammunition containers, today duct tape is used for thousands of applications.  In some cases a polyethylene coated cloth duct tape is used to seal duct systems in HVAC, heating venting and air conditioning, applications, however because duct tape can become brittle over time, aluminum foil tapes are probably a better more reliable choice.  As is common with most tapes, duct tape is make in many grades to meet the needs of specific applications.
