Cloth tape is a tape consisting of a cloth backing and a pressure sensitive adhesive. In some applications, cloth is a desired tape backing because it is strong, tough, resists curling and is very conformable. For certain automotive applications, cloth tapes protect and bundle wire harness because they are conformable and do not rattle or make noise when due to road vibrations. Duct tape is a cloth tape with a top layer of polyethylene added for water resistance. Gaffer’s tape is a vinyl coated cloth tape designed for stage and set construction in theater applications. Carpet tape is a double coated cloth tape used for temporary and permanent hold down of carpets. Hockey players use cloth tape impregnated with rubber as friction tape on the end of their hockey sticks.
For demanding applications, flame retardant fiberglass cloth and flame retardant pressure sensitive adhesives are used create tapes for lining aircraft cargo compartments.
Characteristics, including flexibility, conformability and tear resistance, are key features for fiberglass cloth tapes used in the electrical and electronic markets. Fiberglass cloth is combined with rubber, acrylic or silicone thermosetting adhesives to provide mechanical overwrap protection on coils, toriods and magnet wire.
