Aluminum Tape or Aluminum Foil Tape as it is often called, is supplied in self wound rolls without a liner, with a liner and in custom die cut shapes.   The protective liner, protects the pressure sensitive adhesive and helps keep the aluminum foil from wrinkling when the tape is being unwound. The liner also facilitates die cutting the foil in various sizes and shapes. 

Standard foil thickness for aluminum tape is 2 mil (.002”), 3 mil (.003”) and 5 mil (.005”).  Aluminum tapes with rubber adhesives and acrylic adhesives will meet UL 723,  a flame retardant standard that applies to tapes used for aluminum foil faced duct HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) duct systems.  The heavy duty 5 mil tape is used as a masking tape for aircraft.  Tapes with silicone adhesives are suitable for high temperatures.
